When You Can’t Hear God for Yourself: The Truth About What’s Really Blocking You

Have you ever prayed, fasted, shown up to church… and still felt like Heaven’s voicemail was full?

You’re doing “all the right things,” but something feels off. You want answers, direction, clarity—but all you get is silence.

I’ve been there. And I’m not talking about a quick, passing season of “waiting on the Lord.” I’m talking about years of feeling like I couldn’t catch God’s voice for myself.

The Season I Couldn’t Hear God

About ten years ago, I thought I had finally stepped into the rooms and relationships that would launch me forward. I had opportunities. I was connected to people with influence.

But inside? I felt misplaced. Misunderstood. Small.

I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was surrounded by people who didn’t actually want me to succeed. The tension I felt wasn’t just personality conflict—it was spiritual resistance.

Looking back now, I can see the real problem:
I was dependent on other voices to tell me what God might be saying, and I had never learned how to tune into His voice for myself.

The Real Reason You Might Not Hear God Clearly

When I look back, I can see three major reasons my spiritual ears were blocked:

1. I Was Out of Alignment

You can’t hear clearly in chaos. My heart was entangled with the wrong voices, the wrong assignments, and unhealed wounds. God wasn’t far away—my frequency was just off.

2. I Was Still Soul-Tied to the Wrong Season

Like I shared in my Soul-Tied episode, when your heart is still tethered to an old leader, assignment, or identity, you’ll measure God’s voice against their approval instead of His truth.

3. I Wanted Strategy Before Intimacy

I wanted a “what to do” before I was willing to sit in the “Who to know.” God’s priority wasn’t giving me a business plan—it was bringing me back to His presence.

How to Tune Back In to God’s Voice

If you’re in that place right now, here’s where you can start:
1️⃣ Get Honest About Competing Voices
Ask: What voices, roles, or relationships have more influence on me right now than God’s Word?

2️⃣ Ask Hard, Root-Level Questions in Prayer
Use scripture as a mirror. Example: Psalm 139:23–24 — “Search me, O God…” Then ask, “Lord, what’s the root of my issue?”

3️⃣ Create Space for Silence
Don’t fill every quiet moment with podcasts, sermons, or music. God speaks in stillness.

4️⃣ Break Agreement with Misaligned Voices
Out loud: “I break every agreement with voices that are not aligned with God’s truth for my life. I choose to hear and obey the voice of my Shepherd.”

Truth You Can Hold On To

  • You were created to hear God.
  • Alignment matters more than hustle.
  • His voice will always lead you back to His presence before it leads you to a platform.

“I am His sheep, and I hear His voice clearly. I break ties with every voice that competes with His truth. My heart is still, my spirit is aligned, and my ears are open.”
