Matthew 11:28
"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
Have you ever felt like no matter how much you do, it’s never enough? You serve, you strive, you hustle… but deep inside, you’re still restless, anxious, and exhausted. If that’s you, friend, I want you to know this: you’re not alone.
The enemy has been running an assignment of sabotage against many of us in this season, and it’s simple:
“If I keep you striving, you’ll never rest in who you already are.”
This isn’t just about being busy — it’s about being bound by performance. And until you recognize the cycle, you’ll keep spinning your wheels and missing the peace.
The Lie Behind the Performance Trap
The performance-based identity whispers:
“Do more.”
“Be better.”
“Earn love.”
This mindset pulls us out of daughtership and into spiritual slavery. We measure our worth by our output. We confuse productivity with holiness. We overcommit out of fear of disappointing others.
It sounds noble — working hard, serving God, achieving more. But beneath it lies a dangerous belief:
“You are what you do.”
But here’s the truth: The Kingdom doesn’t operate on performance points — it operates on identity revelation.
The Father is already pleased with you, not because of what you do, but because of who you are in Him.
How Performance Shows Up in Your Life and Business
Here are some common signs you’re trapped in performance:
- You feel guilty resting because you think productivity equals holiness.
- You say “yes” when you want to say “no,” fearing rejection or disappointing others.
- You measure your spiritual maturity by what you produce instead of intimacy with God.
- You secretly believe: “If I stop achieving, I’ll become irrelevant.”
The result?
Chronic stress, anxiety, depression, and burnout. You overthink, procrastinate, compare yourself constantly, and carry a deep sense of inadequacy — no matter what you accomplish.
And that, friend, is exactly where the enemy wants you: exhausted, distracted, and disconnected from God’s voice.
The Spiritual Warfare Behind Striving
This isn’t just a mindset issue — there’s spiritual warfare attached to it.
The enemy’s strategy is clear:
- Keeps you striving so you never rest in who you are.
- Keeps you exhausted so you lack the energy to build what God assigned you.
- Keeps you entangled in comparison, people-pleasing, and overcommitting so you stay distracted from your Kingdom purpose.
When you’re stuck in striving, you can’t hear God clearly. And when you can’t hear Him, you start looking for meaning and direction outside of Him — in hustle culture, mysticism, or even new-age practices — all of which lead you further from His heart.
But God’s Word reminds us:
“
“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28
Breaking Free From the Cycle
Freedom begins when you break agreement with striving and step into your identity as God’s daughter.
Philippians 4:6-7 shows us how:
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Here’s what this looks like in practice:
- Surrender your worries to God.
- Tell Him exactly what’s weighing on your heart. Be specific.
- Break agreement with fear and striving.
Say it out loud: “I renounce the lie that I am what I do. I receive my identity as a daughter of God.”
Journal what He reveals.
When you make space for silence and stillness, the Holy Spirit will show you what’s really holding you back.
Why You May Struggle to Trust God
If you’ve been striving for years, there’s often a deeper root — and God wants to heal it. Here are seven reasons you may find it hard to trust Him:
- Unanswered prayers
- Fear of the unknown
- Trying to control outcomes
- Pain from past betrayals
- A distorted view of God
- Lack of stillness and silence before Him
- Perfectionism and fear of getting it wrong
Friend, God doesn’t want your performance — He wants your heart.
My Story: How Striving Trapped Me
For years, I lived this cycle. I served in ministry, led teams, and wore all the “right” titles… but I was still stuck. I was exhausted, frustrated, and constantly asking God why my life wasn’t moving forward. And then I realized: I didn’t actually trust Him. Growing up in a dysfunctional, abusive home, I learned to fend for myself. I projected my earthly father’s failures onto my Heavenly Father and believed I had to perform to be loved. Even after I gave my life to Christ, I carried those same patterns into my “after Jesus” life. I worked harder, served more, and hustled for His approval — but my heart was far from Him.
Everything changed when I finally stopped performing and started seeking His heart.
